The Principles of Positive Psychology

Founded by Martin Seligman, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, Positive Psychology sets out to focus strengths that allow people to lead happy, resilient, meaningful lives (versus on disorders and deficits). Rather than trying to alleviate suffering the focus is on learning to live a life with meaning and focus on enhancing wellbeing.

The PERMA Model: Five Pillars of Well-Being

In his book "Flourish: A visionary new understanding of Happiness and Well-Being" Seligman introduced the PERMA model, a framework that defines the five core elements of lasting happiness and success:

  • P = Positive Emotion – Cultivating joy, gratitude, and optimism.
  • E = Engagement – Finding flow and deep focus in meaningful work.
  • R = Relationships – Building strong, supportive connections.
  • M = Meaning – Pursuing purpose beyond oneself.
  • A = Accomplishment – Setting and achieving fulfilling goals.

By integrating Positive Psychology principles, coaching moves beyond solving problems. Clients experience greater clarity & self-awareness, a more balanced, fulfilling life and improved performance in personal & professional settings.
